  16. Knot, "Master Harold"...and the Boys); with an honorary doctorate
  17. in literature from the University of Port Elizabeth, and with
  18. the Freedom of the City from Port Elizabeth's mayor; in South
  19. Africa. More than three decades ago, Fugard began writing and
  20. producing plays about the injustices of racism and apartheid,
  21. some of them set in Port Elizabeth, where the playwright has
  22. a home. For many of those years, Fugard and his family were
  23. pariahs in the eyes of the government and many whites.
